Talent + Hunger

I've probably played this album more than any other over the years. I first heard it sitting beside a lake in Finland.

Free were started by four teenagers in 1968: Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke were 18, Paul Kossoff was 17, and Andy Fraser was 15.

Stop for a moment. Get your head around that.

By 1970, with "All Right Now" and Fire and Water, they were one of Britain's top rock bands. But success brought pressure, tensions grew, and they split in 1973.

What strikes me, listening to this album, is how they got so good, so fast, so young.

Part of the answer is their development started well before Free. None of them arrived from nowhere.

They studied the R&B and blues scenes on both sides of the Atlantic. They had talent, of course, but they also studied with real hunger.

Talent + Hunger.

That's a rarer combination than people think.
